The IREG Observatory on Academic Ranking and Excellence (commonly referred to as the IREG Observatory) is an international institutional non-profit association of ranking organizations, universities, and other stakeholders interested in university rankings and academic excellence. Its mission is to raise public awareness and understanding of a wide range of issues related to university rankings and academic excellence.

The experience accumulated by a group of ranking experts and analysts, who first met in 2002, led to the establishment of the International Ranking Expert Group (IREG). In 2009, this informal group was transformed into the IREG Observatory as a non-profit organization. It is registered in Brussels, Belgium, with its Secretariat located in Warsaw, Poland.
